DorWey Driving School  -  Reverse Park

Key Points: Keep the speed down and OBS high. This manoeuvre may be puzzling to other road users as quite often you will be reversing around a solitary vehicle. You must take this into account and use signals where necessary to try to clarify what you are attempting to do and be prepared to stop when necessary.

Please note that 'OBS' = Observation

  1. OBS as you approach 'target vehicle' (TV). If there is anyone at all to signal too - then let them have it.

  2.

  3. Stop the car with a 1 metre gap between you and the TV and with your door mirror level with the end of the TV

  4.

  5. As soon as you have stopped the car engage reverse gear to alert any following vehicles to your intentions

  1. OBS - then reverse until the rear of TV is visible in the rear side window.

OBS - then apply one rapid turn left as you reverse slowly.

  1. Bring car around to about 45 degrees

  2.

  3. OBS - then apply one rapid turn right (your wheels are now straight again)

  1. Using a combination of door mirror and rear window bring the rear of car closer to the kerb

  2. OBS - then turning the wheel to the right swing the front of the car in towards the kerb. (This turn will most likely require full right lock but this will depend on the angle of the car, how far from the kerb you are and how fast the car is moving. Keep your eyes on things and adjust as necessary.)

  1. When the car is almost parallel to the kerb (with the kerb almost at its 'rest place' on the windscreen) quickly straighten the wheels (left) (don't over-steer!) and stop.

  1. When you stop the car should be within a reasonable distance from, and parallel too, the kerb. You should be able to see 'tyres on tarmac' of the vehicle in front.

Running out of room! If you think that you will hit the kerb - then stop the car!

  • OBS then move slowly back out into the road on full right lock

  • Once you have well cleared the car in front apply some left turn to alter the angle of the car.

  • Stop and OBS.

  • Reverse back applying full right lock checking your progress as you go.

If you do this you will get one minor driving fault rather than a fail!
