DorWey Driving School  - Vehicle Safety Checks

The Vehicle Safety Checks are part of the driving test. Candidates will be asked two questions, one show-me and one tell-me. The show-me question may require the candidate to open the bonnet but after that the candidate shouldn't touch anything because it may be hot and/or dirty. If you have to open the car door make sure that you shut it afterwards so you don't block the footpath. For safety's sake: If you are asked to demonstrate how to check the lights,  stay on the footpath side of the car as you walk from the front to the rear.

You will find all the questions and answers in your logbook.

Below you will see a picture of the Toyota Yaris engine bay layout.

Tyres

The answer to the question about tread depth can be a little confusing.

Q. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

A. No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

The minimum of 1.6 mm is the depth of the grooves (the tread). This minimum of 1.6mm should be across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre (as shown in the diagram) and around the entire outer circumference. In other words there should be no flat spots where the tread is less than 1.6mm anywhere, all around the tyre, in this 3/4 band. This is the minimum legal limit and you should not let a tyre get down to this level because stopping distances will be increased. You should think about changing tyres when they are at 3mm.
