DorWey Driving School  - Turning Left & Right

Once you have practised Moving off and Stopping the next subject will be Turning Left

As mentioned previously, the in-car briefings before the lessons will go into quite a lot of detail. To help you  understand these new ideas you should read through the notes on this page, before the lesson. After the lesson read them again to study any points that you may have missed or not fully understood. If you find anything that is still not clear please let me know - we can then have another quick look at it. You should also read about the subject in the Highway Code book.

Here are a few general notes for those who have yet to take this lesson and reminders for those who have completed the lesson.

Turning involves moving the car from a major road into a minor road - see fig.1. The major road is the main road and the minor road is the side road. A minor road will have road markings at the end instructing the driver on how to use the junction. The markings will inform you that you are approaching: Give-way Junctions, Stop Junctions or Controlled (traffic lights) Junctions. These road markings will be discussed fully during the Turning Left & Right lesson but in the meantime have a look at your Highway Code .

 Turning Right Means Turning Last

If you apply this rule at junctions it should help you work out the priorities. If both vehicles are approaching the junction or are at the junction waiting to turn - the driver who is turning right should turn last. (This rule applies to the vehicles on the major road. Drivers in the minor road should wait for the drivers on the major road to complete their manoeuvre.) See fig 2 and the warning below!.

As for any manoeuvre you must use the Mirrors - Signal - Position - Speed/Gear - Look, routine on the approach.

Warning!

You will be aware that we don't live in a perfect world and this certainly applies to life on the roads. Fortunately most drivers will use the rules but nevertheless drivers  may not apply them correctly. They may also forget to apply them and they may just choose to totally ignore them. You can not take anything for granted so keep an eye on your fellow motorists and be prepared to adjust your driving to accommodate their bad driving!
